These data show the development in a selection of economic, social and environmental indicators in the Nordic region since 2008. The Nordic Region total in this case includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

The indicators are:

Population (persons) from POPU02,

GDP (euro) from NAAC01,

Total employment (persons) from NAAC08,

Environmental tax revenues (euro) from ENVTX01 and

CO2 emissions from EMIS14.

The environmental taxes and the CO2 emissions are estimated according to the principles of environmental-economic accounts. For the CO2 emissions this means, for instance, that emissions from international transport activities outside the Nordic region are included. For Iceland, however, the emissions are estimated according to a territory principle (IPCC), which means that emissions outside the national territory are not included. The figures for GDP and environmental tax revenues are reached by adding up current price estimates in euros for the five countries. The figures are therefore affected by year-to-year changes in the exchange rates between national currencies and the euro.

GDP, million euro

In current prices. Gross domestic product (GDP) at market prices is the final result of the production activity of resident producer units. It can be defined in three ways - in this matrix the expenditure approach (b) is used:

(a) production approach: GDP is the sum of gross value added of the various institutional sectors or the various industries plus taxes and less subsidies on products (which are not allocated to sectors and industries). It is also the balancing item in the total economy production account.

(b) expenditure approach: GDP is the sum of final uses of goods and services by resident institutional units (final consumption and gross capital formation), plus exports and minus imports of goods and services.

(c) income approach: GDP is the sum of uses in the total economy generation of income account (compensation of employees, taxes on production and imports less subsidies, gross operating surplus and mixed income of the total economy).
